BAMBILI: INHABITANTS ENGAGES IN HOME AND ABROAD SUPPLY OF
GREENGRASSHOPPER “MINGWUIN”.
The green grasshopper commonly known as “mingwuin “ is an insect considered as a nutritious delicacy
by many people in the north west, west, south , east regions of the country and
abroad. The month of November and December precisely from mid-November to
ending December is considered as a natural business period because of
the intense “mingwuin” fall.
Many capable Bambili inhabitants grasp this golden opportunity
to invest heavily in the “mingwuin” business. They spend from one hundred thousand francs
and above in order to set heavy traps which will facilitate a quick catch.
Those with well-constructed traps are sure of a good catch
as they refile the drums up to 2 times and even 3 times for a night when there
is a heavy fall.
Ma Beatrice Ngum a well renounce and permanent dealer In
this business said that the start was really discouraging because the fall was slow
but curently, they are overwhelmed because the catch is great.
“The demand for “mingwuin” is high because we supply in many
regions in Cameroon and people abroad especially in the U.S give their command”.
Mah Beatrice stated.
She said at times the demand is more than the supply and they
struggle to strive meeting it. many people come to the scene in the night to buy because the price will be moderate.
“This is lucrative because it helps my household a lot as money from the sells helps me to invest hugely on my farm and poetry farm and its able to sustained and nurture the pigs and fowls in the poetry farm, and equally buy enough food stuff for the family “she explained.
Most students of the university of Bamenda (UBa), Cameroon college
of arts, science and technology (CCAST), government technical school Ntigi (G.T.S) and little ones from the primary school ,
even old mothers and fathers treasure these insects . These students and pupils
apply powder or and Vaseline to prevent insect bite(crishy) and are seen from 7:00 pm to 12:00AM roaming the streets
of mile 10 Bambili with plastic buckets and containers where most of these traps are mounted. They surround the traps picking escapees falling off the barrels
. Some of these traps are equally mounted in areas like CCAST street, Calember street and many in mile 9 Bambili.
These students express that “mingwin” is expensive to afford
eat and be satisfied that’s why they prefer hunting it themselves. Some of
these students after a good catch send some of the grasshoppers to their
parents and families in other villages and
sell the rest assisting them in solving some financial issues.

The grasshopper catch this year is greater than last year
as the traps facilitate easy, fast and good catch. The traps
consist of bright bulbs which attracts the insects , the zinc which channels the
grasshoppers to both plastic nd silver drums then generators are steamed to
sustain the shinning light when there is no electricity .
